Looking For Books in all the wrong Places?

This week, we needed to create a short database video tutorial. I decided to create a video explaining how to use the catalog to find an item in a specific part of the collection by narrowing search results. I was actually just asked how to do this by a patron, so I thought it would make for a nice, quick tutorial.

I was surprised at how easy it was to learn Screencastify! I like the extension because it is very, very simple. I could definitely produce a tutorial video like this in VDSC, but because VDSC is so complicated, it would take a lot longer to do the exact same thing.

I liked the Zoom in feature. I experimented a bit with the red pen, but to me, it was a bit cumbersome. After I made the video, I tried to add music from Purple Planet by the “upload media” button. I struggled here and to my surprise, after reading up on it, there are two ways to add music:

  1. Play it in another tab (which would preclude you from using any music that is shorter than your video length)
  2. Play it on another device and have the microphone record that while you are recording your voice.

After figuring out how to do it, I was kind of bummed because in order to add it, I would have to totally re-record what I had made, and I actually liked the finished product. For now, I decided that I would leave the video alone without adding music, and I’ll just keep in mind next time that if I do decide to add music, I need to do that while I record the video.

HI Megan, I enjoyed your video and thought it was really well-done! I like that you were able to use the zoom feature as you were recording, so it was seemless. I struggled with the Purple Planet music, too, for the book trailer. I ended up just using the one that was included in the template because I couldn’t figure it out without paying for the audio feature. Good job with the video – I think it would be something very useful for your pratrons! Susie

Hi Megan! Well-done with using screencastify and using the ‘circle mouse’ button which led me through the whole searching process. What I liked about your tutorial was also the zooming in part, how to find a specific title or topic, and searching from 2200? titles , you narrowed it down to 72! Wow! I liked the pace of it and you walking us through from format to audience, to year which is very important to look for as sometimes one may not know which filter to start off with!
